Depression Therapy in NYC

Depression does not always look like staying in bed. Sometimes you get up, go to work and answer every message, and still feel absent from your own life. Depression therapy helps you find your way back, virtually, anywhere in New York State.

When It Is More Than a Bad Week

Many people carry a narrow picture of depression, so they wait until it gets worse before they reach out. It often looks more like this:

Going through the motions
Tired no matter how much you sleep
Nothing sounds good anymore
Snapping at the people you love
Pulling away from friends and family
Feeling disconnected from yourself
Holding it together at work, falling apart at home
Wondering if this is just who you are now

High-Functioning Depression: Showing Up, Running on Empty

From the outside you look productive and capable. You care for your family, keep a demanding schedule and meet every deadline. Inside, you feel detached, flat and overwhelmed, and no one would guess it.

Present, but Not Really There

You do what needs to be done, but the things that used to matter to you no longer reach you.

Irritable and Exhausted

Small things feel heavy, patience runs out faster, and rest never seems to restore you.

You Do Not Have to Wait

Depression does not need to become severe before it deserves support. What you are feeling is enough of a reason to reach out.

Depression or Burnout?

The two share a lot: exhaustion, low motivation, irritability and trouble concentrating. Burnout is usually tied to ongoing demands and stress, often at work. Depression tends to reach across your whole life, including joy and connection. Many people experience both.

It is not a checklist, and you do not need to know which one it is before you ask for help. A therapist can help you sort out what you are dealing with and what will help. If work stress is at the center, our burnout therapy page goes deeper.

Often closer to depression:

  • Low mood that follows you on weekends and vacations
  • Losing interest in people and things you used to enjoy
  • Feeling hopeless or worthless, not just tired

Why Depression Happens

Sometimes there is a clear cause. Often there is not, and that can make it harder to take seriously. Depression usually comes from several things at once:

Life Events

A loss, a breakup, a move, a health concern, or a long stretch of stress that never let up.

Biology and Family History

Depression can run in families, and the body plays a real part in how mood is regulated.

Your Environment

Isolation, a demanding job, a difficult relationship, or a city that rarely slows down.

No Clear Trigger Needed

You do not need a reason to be struggling for the struggle to be real.

Recognizing the signs in yourself is enough to reach out. Finding the cause can be part of the work, not a requirement to start it.

How Depression Affects Your Relationships

Depression can make you pull away from the people closest to you, even when you want them near. Plans get canceled, conversations feel like effort, and irritability can surprise both of you. Therapy looks at how depression is showing up between you and the people you love, and how to reconnect. If worry about a relationship is part of it, our relationship anxiety page goes deeper.

Postpartum depression

Feeling low, numb or overwhelmed after having a baby is common, and it is not a failure of love or of parenting. Our therapists who support new and expecting mothers are on our women's mental health page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if it is depression or just a rough patch?
A rough patch usually lifts as circumstances change. Depression tends to last two weeks or more and touches many parts of life: sleep, energy, interest in things you used to enjoy, and how you see yourself. You do not need to be sure before reaching out. A free consult is a good place to talk it through.
Does therapy help with depression?
Yes. Talk therapy is one of the most effective treatments for depression, on its own or alongside medication. It helps you understand what is feeding the depression, ease the symptoms, and rebuild connection with yourself and the people around you.
What kind of therapy do you use for depression?
Our therapists use evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for depression, psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness-based and somatic therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Your therapist works with you on an approach that fits your goals.
Can I do therapy for depression online?
Yes. All of our sessions are virtual, HIPAA-compliant video sessions from anywhere in New York State. When getting out the door is the hardest part of the day, therapy from home can make it easier to keep showing up.
Do you take insurance?
We are in-network with Aetna and Northwell Direct, so with either plan you only pay your copay. For other plans we provide monthly superbills for out-of-network reimbursement, and we keep a limited number of sliding-scale spots. 45-minute sessions are $200-275 and 60-minute sessions, including the intake, are $225-300, depending on the therapist's experience.
What if I am in crisis right now?
If you are having thoughts of suicide or are worried about your safety, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline any time, day or night. In an emergency, call 911. Therapy is not a crisis service, but we are here for ongoing support once you are safe.
