Are Politics Stressing You the F*!K out?!
As you and everyone else are freaking out about the state of the world and politics, it’s easy to feel incredibly helpless and hopeless. In times of distress, it’s so important to take care of yourself. Below are key ways to stay sane and thrive during this difficult time:
1- moderate the amount of news you consume! It can be tempting to doomscroll all day and we often get inundated with news alerts. Try setting a limit to how much news you’re taking in. This could look like switching from alerts in real time to a summary or digest each day and/or only checking your preferred news source once per day.
2- make time for self-care every single day!
This is very individualistic: whatever helps you feel like the best version of yourself, even if it’s as simple as brushing your teeth or mindfully drinking your cup of coffee.
3- reach out to friends or family for support! Likely they are feeling similarly to you. It can be helpful to know that you have loved ones there to go through it with and to build each other up when one of you is feeling down.
4- schedule time to decompress with a loved one—in person! An example could be a walk, sharing a meal together, or going to an event like a concert or open mic.
5- learn a new skill! This helps our brain stay active and can be a great distraction from doomscrolling. Download a language learning app and get back to picking up the language you studied in high school, start playing a new instrument- there are a ton of people teaching affordable lessons and even group lessons available. Crocheting and knitting is also a great way to de-stress.
6- get involved politically! You don’t have to run for office (although more power to you if you do)! There are wonderful organizations that help you call your representatives such as five calls (5calls.org). This org helps US constituents make a real political impact! You can also donate money or your time to get involved at the local level of politics.
7- go to therapy! This one goes without saying. I may be biased but I think every single person out there could benefit from therapy, whether it’s individual or group therapy. Check out our website rpalcsw.com to learn more about our amazing therapists and book a FREE consultation call.
